  • Overview

    Provides Histology/Cytology services to meet the needs of patients, performed in accordance with accepted standards and practices. Prepares tissues specimens of good quality to expedite diagnosis by the Pathologist in any or all divisions of the Histology laboratory.

    Responsibilities

    1. * Processes and stains blocks of tissue specimens with no errors or specimen mix-ups. . Accurately and precisely processes all special stains required by the pathologist. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary for appropriate lab specimen handling.
    2. * Maintains proficiency in AutoCyte instrument. Performs routine preventive maintenance on instruments. Performs troubleshooting according to ability and reports instrument problems to Charge. Keeps equipment and work area clean and free of blood borne pathogens.
    3. * Follows the format, policies and procedures for the admission, registration, and test     ordering in the Meditech system. Accurately orders and cancels tests in the LIS Meditech system. Ensures correct patient identification and information when ordering tests.      
    4. * Has ability to perform both manual and automated staining in Cytology. Cleans and maintains stain on a regular basis.
    5. *Responsible for the inventory of supplies in the department. Unpacks and stores new reagent shipments correctly. Labels and documents date when placing reagents into use. Files slides.
    6. *Prepares both gynecological and non-gynecological specimens for AutoCyte monolayer instrument processing.     
    7. *Performs quality control as defined in the procedures manuals. Documents and reports QC problems to the supervisor. Reviews and evaluates test results for accuracy. Follows up appropriately on abnormal or problematic results. Provides organized legible documentation of test activity.
    8. *Participates in the technical training of specimen preparations for new employees. Assists   with projects and in other areas as time permits.
    9. *Admit, order, retrieve histories and create work batches for gyn specimens. Perform both manual and automated staining, clean and maintain staining area and instrumentations.
    10. *Assists the Manager/Supervisor with various assignments. Participates in external HT

    Qualifications

    1. One year of laboratory experience, either working in a clinical or pathology section.
    2. Experience with Meditech Computer Information System preferred.
    3. Completed course in Human Anatomy and Physiology preferred.
    4. Basic knowledge of medical terminology required.
    5. Proven ability to understand and communicate assigned laboratory orders.
    6. Ability to effectively communicate, both written and verbally.
    7. Must be able to distinguish color.
    8. Must be able to operate equipment as it relates to clinical instrumentation
